Homework Expectations

The primary purpose of homework is practice, an extension of the day’s work, time to work on long-term projects or an investigation of something for class discussion, not introduction of a new skill. Students should be able to complete it independently. If unable to complete an assignment independently, please notify your teacher. 7th—8th grade teachers work together as a team to plan for approximately one hour nightly, unless a student opts to take on extra courses or enrichment, such as language, algebra, music, band, etc.

Science:
*The majority of the 'Roller Coaster' performance assessment projects were presented on the Friday before break. We were all so impressed with the designs, functionality and construction that went into their work.  We really enjoyed listening to students talk about the steps they took to come up with their final product and watching their presentations.  Each of the coasters were unique, and the students were so excited to share; what a great way to apply and demonstrate all  they had learned through the unit!  If students were absent on Friday the 17th, they need to be prepared to give their class presentation of their project (packet must be finished, drawings of changes in design and all modifications that were made throughout the construction phase) the next time they are in attendance
*We have started a new unit on 'Genetics and Heredity' this week.  Following are links to a couple of awesome introductory videos shown in class on Monday and Tuesday

Language Arts in class 4.16

The main purpose of Writer’s Notebook is to practice the art of creative writing.  Today we will write solely for enjoyment, and we will share our writing during the second half of class.

The Rules

  • 20 minutes of silent writing time - You must write for the ENTIRE time. You may not do anything else. If you think you are done, reread your writing - you can always make it better.
  • Sharing - During the second half of class, 6-8 brave volunteers will share their writing.  Everyone will listen respectfully to show appreciation for their work.

As you write, pay close attention to the words you select.  Are you choosing the most accurate, descriptive words you can?  Are you describing things, people, scenes, smells, sounds, feelings, etc?

Choose one of the following prompts for today’s Writer’s Notebook:

1.    Start your entry this way:

Dear nightmare I had last night,

2.  Write about the CIA’s newest spy, who is incredibly bad at his/her job.

3. The Challenge: Use the power of YOUR words, images, audio and/or video to combat climate change and win big money! First place: $100 | Second place: $75 | Third place: $50 | Plus coupons, gifts and other fun stuff! DEADLINE FRIDAY, APRIL 17!  Go to:

http://youngwritersproject.org/climate15
(This is where the 3 prompts about climate change are.)
